MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND
TO THE BALLROOM BLOCK PARTY!
Jane's Walk MKE is back for its 4th year! Last year, the community hosted 36 free, resident-led walks, bikes, and paddles all around the city, from Villard to Lincoln Avenues and Hawthorn Glen to the lakefront. Almost 1,000 residents participated in the events.
This year, we have more in store, including new walks, more film screenings, this new-and-vibrant opening celebration on May 1 at Turner Hall, and a finale celebration at Paliafito Eco-Arts Park on May 31.
Inspired by Project for Public Spaces' Power of 10 concept, which argues that "places thrive when users have a range of reasons (10+) to be there. These might include a place to sit, playgrounds to enjoy, art to touch, music to hear, food to eat, history to experience, and people to meet. Ideally, some of these activities will be unique to that particular place, reflecting the culture and history of the surrounding community" (https://www.pps.org/article/the-power-of-10).
At the Ballroom Block Party, Turner Hall will be transformed into a mini-neighborhood featuring 10 fun opportunities to meet your fellow residents, learn more about Jane's Walk MKE and our Community Partners, eat, drink, dance, build, and more!
Jane's Walk MKE 2018 photos, plus the award-winning photography project ZIP MKE, featuring images from all 28 ZIP Codes in the city.
2. LISTEN (and DANCE?)
Community Partners committed to improving our city will line the "sidewalks" of the ballroom and a book corner will inspire you.
You'll receive a Community Partners bingo card to encourage your engagement with our friends. Did someone say door prizes?
5. EAT & DRINK
Enjoy mounds of pupusas from Cielito Salvadoreño, catering from Annie Minga (remember her Jamaican stew last year?), and more (while supplies last.) The hall bar will also be open.
Enjoy Milwaukee trivia from bar favorite Quizmaster Trivia from 6:15-7:15 pm!
Ok, so this one's about playing, too, but also a chance to build with gigantic Tinker Toys. MKE Plays will fill the floor with its Imagination Playground. Time to see and play through your "child's" eye!
Don a pair of Jane Jacob's cat-eye glasses with your friends, hold up a picket sign, and declare that you too are Jane--all in front of our fabulous photo backdrop. We'll post to Facebook and our website so you can share throughout May!
Our major partners, Safe & Healthy Streets MKE, will feature ways you can get involved in real ways to change the narrative (and conditions) of our streets.
Consider supporting the social justice mission of Milwaukee Turners by becoming a member. And make sure to take your Jane's Walk MKE Passport to the City with you so you can log your May walks, bikes, and paddles. Bring the Passport to the finale celebration for some fun surprises!
11. BONUS! We'll have free stickers and, for sale, our new 2019 t-shirt!

As a program of Milwaukee Turners, Jane’s Walk MKE is part of a worldwide movement of over 200 cities hosting free, resident-led walking tours inspired by urbanist and writer Jane Jacobs, but Milwaukee is unique by expanding Jane’s Walk from one weekend to the whole month! Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was a writer, urbanist and activist who championed the voices of everyday people in neighborhood planning and city-building.
